Joan Storrey & Soaring Eagle
The Unique Endurance Horse
Endurance Racing consists of either 50 mile or 100 mile races, run over all sorts of terrain such as mountains, logging trails, rivers, sand and or mud. Every 15 to 20 miles the horses have to pass a very stringent vet check before being allowed to continue. The 50 mile races are completed in 4 to 5 hours while the 100's take 10 to 12 hours.
To excel in this sport it requires a very fit, well conditioned horse and a rider who really knows his/her horse inside out, so that vet checks can be passed without losing valuable time. If one can't pass the vet check within the stated time declared before the race, the horse is not allowed to complete the race.
Arabians, 14 hands to 15 hands are usually the horse of choice for this type of racing. Soaring Eagel is a 17 hand Arab/Clydesdale cross gelding. Horses of this size are not supposed to have the inner cooling off ability or the stamina to do well in this sport. His record speaks for itself as from the very beginning, he continues to year after year astound fellow riders.
In 1995 we dropped out of the picture. This was because Soaring Eagle showed a slight degree of offness and not even Guelph Equine Research Center could figure out what his problem was. Finally a chiropractor pointed out that his back was noticeably out of alignment. She suggested treatment plus a trip to Performance Saddlery in Ithaca New York for a saddlefitting and a purchase.
I came away with an Albion Dressage Original Comfort seat saddle. The reason for this pick was to get a saddle that spread my weight over the maximum area possible on the horse, comfort for the horse and even awsome comfort for me. "Who could ask for anything more?" This definitely solved our problem.
One must understand, this poor saddle must withstand an awful beating through the mile after mile training of my horse plus the actual races themselves. We train and race in all sorts of temperatures and weather conditions. Water is constantly being poured on our horses necks as a coolant so the leather is soaked a high percentage of the time, and yet this saddle continues to stand up.
The excellent support, care and guidance that I get from Performance Saddlery is Very greatly appreciated and gives me all the confidence in the world that I am doing all I humanly can for my horse while he gives me his thrilling rides.

Thank You Albion and Performance Saddlery
